Show Notes March: Blizzard News & Events

The purpose of this post is to provide news about Blizzard related tournaments and news about Blizzard properties that Blizzard doesnt promote as widely and hopefully offer more than patch notes and press releases to you podcasters.

I intend to update this and the Blizzard Calendar post as often as I come across news and events, so every few days, and will link to and  if its something I found particularly interesting.

It's very long. I know. I'm sorry. Please leave comments and suggestions!

Before the Storm Novel Comes Out June 12

Before the Storm (World of Warcraft) Hardcover – June 12, 2018 by Christie Golden

In non Tournament news, the 20th anniversary of Starcraft is almost over but for the /salute . Numerous Pro players from the past and commentators assembled once more in Day9's garage for a Starcraft LAN tournament and conversation, memories, and the mystery of who ate Idra's pork chops solved? The missing pork chops ignited a legendary feud between Idra and Huk of the Team Evil Geniuses that remains to this day, and the Legendary Idra plays Starcraft. Lots and lots of Starcraft.

Maru won WESG vs Dark in China and a ridiculous amount of money two weeks ago, then in the prestigious Korean tournament, GSL R of 4 did it again to face Stats this week in the Finals winning 4-2 for his first GSL win.

NationWars is in the Round of 8. The carbot video was great and from reports, Avilo the Internet troll is on his best behavior doing research on their opponents for Team USA after his fan base voted him into the team. Reynor the 15 year old prodigy from Italy All Killed Team France. After his recent Round of 8 finish and looking like Harry Potter, this kid is going uphill fast and about to become old enough to compete in official WCS tournaments. China ended his run however, just before 2017 Champions Korea vs Mexico, with Innovation, soO and MMA, back from military service, took on SpeCial in an incredible series of matches coming back 0-2 to beat the best of Korea. The two years Juanito (SpeCial) has spent living in Korea is paying off this year and now that he is consistently breaking into the Round of 8 or Round of 4, will Juanito be heading to BlizzCon and will housemates Elazer and Scarlett be with him?

The other breakout star so far of NationWars is Team Sweden's Sortof and Brazilian substitute player TerraN who All Killed Bolivia while Kelazhur was in flight to Korea.

Team USA fielded their power house Neeb for their matches on Day 3, and he All Cleared Bulgaria. Was good to see Neeb having a little fun. And the players you've never really heard of putting a good run in.

There were no significant upsets other than Mexico vs Korea, with most teams putting their lesser members in first to let them have screen time, and the team powerhouse to get a little more sleep in some cases.

Still in: Korea, Mexico, Poland, Ukraine, Finland, Brazil, USA, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden.

In Twitch Rivals, the Anniversary stream, DeMuslim cleaned up in the new Twitch Rivals series of Starcraft 8v8 EU matches, a long with surprisingly, Retjah, the former SC1 pro turned ReMastered player who has come back to playing both versions of Starcraft now. Not full time, he works at Twitch I think, but judging by his consistent high rankings in these 8v8 matches he's doing really nicely. Two of the 3 US 8v8 series have played as well so far.

All the 8v8 Rivals players were streaming and most in one or another Discord together which makes for some very fun commentary, deal making, backstabbing and harass between friends.

We are thrilled to have joining us a wealth of community figures from across all eras of StarCraft, including Idra, HuK, Livibee, Ret, TLO, Nony, Lzgamer, PiG, White-Ra, and UpaTreeZelda! The show begins on Friday, March 30 at 10:00 a.m. PDT on with a “competitive" free-for-all to get things started. On March 31, the show resumes at 10 a.m. PDT and run throughout the day.

User Recreates ‘Diablo II’ in ‘Starcraft II’ Mod

We’re still waiting on Blizzard to reveal whether or not they’re working to remaster Diablo II, but in the meantime, fans have turned to other means to get their updated fix of the 2000 classic: Modding. One such mod is The Curse of Tristram by egod123, which looks to recreate Diablo II using Starcraft II. The project has been in development since last year, and with no cease-and-desist letter in sight, things are looking promising.

So promising, in fact, that the author had started an IndieGogo campaign to offset the time needed to devote to the game, with the campaign finishing up with $1,902 USD (of the cheeky $6,666 goal) in donations. The mod is free to download, and will be released as a series of custom maps published through arcade. In fact, according to the IndieGogo site, the beta is “just around the corner”. The author also streams their progress on their Twitch channel quite regularly, so if you’re keen, check it out.

Twitch Rivals Channel Hosts Starcraft II FFA Bounty Brawl

8v8 match, 5 matches/day.
March 12, 20, 24 EU with retired SC1 pros White Ra and Retjah, and SC2 pros TLO, Stephano, Mana, Hastem, BeastyQT and DeMuslim.
March 16, 25 29 NA with iNcontroL, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ? and ?

Stephano broke out of his base to attack his neighbor Harstem, while Retjah eliminated TLO who had defeted White Ra, but Ret spent the game quietly expanding into the south wall and center while Stephano made and broke alliances along the north wall, BeastyQT Terraned up to Battlecruisers to assault his neighbor to the north DeMuslim, who was fending off attacks by Stephano and Harstem. It was a long slog of alliances and peace deals back and forth, until Stephano attacked Ret, by now holding over half the map and with his Team Liquid allies and fellow Dutchman, Harstem, taking out the remaining players with massed corrupters leaving Harstem to last, but failed to notice one last unit of DeMuslim's hiding deep in his own territory, leaving Retjah the winner of map #1, DeMuslim in 2nd, Harstem third and Stephano 4th.

BeastyQT decimated TLO who tried for a fast expand too fast, Stephano on WhiteRa but let him live, taking out Retjah instead as Harstem was assaulting Ret's corner, the 4 mid bases taking out their nearest corner neighbor all but Demuslim who took out Mana to expand to mid. TLO expanded south into the Retjah bases as BeastyQT took over his. Harstem took those though and in fleeing behind TLOs expansion drew Harstem and White Ra into attacking TLOs new empire and carving it like a cherry pie. Stephano went for Harstem next but the carriers won leaving DeMuslim, Stephano and Harstem, with White Ra's one base patrolling the map underfoot and BeastyQTs last two command centers running silent on the edge. DeMuslim took 3rd after Harstem sniped White R and BeastyQT, leaving Stephano to take first.

Retjah, DeMuslim, White Ra and TLO emerged from the ashes of the first 14 minutes of game 3, Ret feuding with TLO across the South center and White Ra poking into Ret's bases. DeMuslim called for a Team Liquid reprieve and an ascendent TLO agreed, taking out Ret then White Ra. DeMuslim on the NW island had covered it in missile turrets leaving no way for TLO to assault, but TLO took out enough turrets and 4 nydus erupted ferrrying his army across, but it wasnt enough and TLO tapped out.

2018 GSL SEASON 1 CODE S R of 4! Stats defeats soO!

On Tuesday's match up, Stats gave everything plus the sink to claw his way back to victory over soO from behind in 7 matches, breaking the curse/Blessing of soO for the moment. soO has never lost once in the Round of 8, but been to 6 grand finals and lost them all, an unparallelled record and was expected to do so again. Thursday Stat's opponent to be will be decided between Maru and Dark, a rematch from the WESG finals Maru won at the beginning of March in China.
GSL is the Korean Starcraft bracket, a twice weekly months long tournament. Currently in Round of 8, Code S plays every Tuesday and Saturday. March 9, GSL Code S continues in the Round of 8, with female Champion Scarlett facing soO, Classic vs Stats, Zest Vs Dark, and Maru vs sOs. Summary of the R of 16 matches here:

StarCraft: Remastered Pro Arrested For Match-Fixing

Maru Wins World Electronic Sports Games 2018 Global Finals!

March 13th to 18th in Haikou, China.
Maru narrowly defeated Dark. Serral continued to dominate among the foreign challengers with Scarlett and Neeb placing well. Fifteen-year-old Italian Zerg player Reynor was the star of the final group stage, adding top foreign Terran SpeCial to his list of victims in what is turning into his breakout tournament. Meanwhile, Dark, Classic, and Maru upheld Korea's reputation as StarCraft's dominant nation, remaining undefeated in series (18-0 overall) in the tournament. uThermal came closest to giving the Koreans pause, dragging Classic into a tight, five game series. WESG Commenced March 12th with another Olympic style march of Champions and ceremonies fitting the StarCraft tournament with the largest prize pool of the year.  Players however, began live tweeting almost immediately upon arrival, their hotel including live rats, roaches, no running water, tea colored water, no power, and inspections to shut the hotel down entirely. Several players relocated, the rest were relocated the next day by WESG officials with apologies.
